Winfield Scott Hancock (February 14, 1824 – February 9, 1886) was a United States Army officer and the Democratic nominee for President of the United States in 1880. George A. Nay, the son of Anisa S. and Lucretia Marsh Nay, was born in 1842 in Georgia, Vermont, and served as a private in Company M of First Vermont Regiment Cavalry, Vermont Volunteers in the Civil War. He enlisted on September 10, 1864, and mustered out on June 21, 1865. He died on April 5, 1909 in Montpelier, Vermont.
